Kiran Bedi is a retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, social activist, and politician. She is widely recognized as the first woman to join the IPS.

  • Early Life and Education: Born in Amritsar, India, she excelled in her academic pursuits. She holds a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in Political Science. She also obtained a law degree.

  • Police Career: Bedi joined the IPS in 1972 and served for 35 years. During her career, she held various positions, including traffic in-charge of Delhi, Deputy Inspector General of Police in Mizoram, and Inspector General of Prisons in Tihar Jail. Her tenure at Tihar Jail is particularly notable for introducing various reforms and initiatives.

  • Achievements and Awards: Bedi is a recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Government Service in 1994, recognizing her innovative and reformative initiatives in policing and prison administration. She has also received numerous other awards and accolades for her contributions to public service.

  • Social Activism: After retiring from the IPS in 2007, Bedi became involved in social activism. She participated in the India Against Corruption movement and focused on issues such as Good Governance, Police Reforms and women's empowerment.

  • Political Career: In 2015, Bedi joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and served as the party's Chief Ministerial candidate for the Delhi Legislative Assembly election. In 2016, she was appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, a union territory of India, a position she held until 2021.
